Now, where to begin? That’s the hardest part! You have a brilliant idea in your head, you can see exactly what you want to accomplish, you have this feeling you know how to do it, but… how do you start?

The truth is, there’s no single correct way of starting a drawing. Artists use various methods that align the best with their personal style of work. But, if you are a beginner, you might know a lesser number of methods. Chances are you keep using them even if it doesn’t seem to work.

In this article, I will show you three popular methods of starting a creature/character drawing.

Tips on How to Improve your Drawing

This method is most popular among beginners. In fact, this is the method using which most professional artists learned to draw. They admitted it themselves. Basically, tracing is about drawing over a picture to copy its lines, partially or completely. Hence, the name Tracing, that is, to trace over a drawing.  As s result, you get a drawing with clean lines and perfect proportions.

In order to trace, you just have to find a hard copy picture of what you want to draw. Then, cover it with a thin sheet of paper to see the original image through it. Now, draw over the lines you see.

As a beginner, if you have mastered tracing, now it’s time to learn Imaginative Tracing. Frankly and honestly, this is where your real drawing begins! In this method as a beginner, you are allowed to use a reference like a photo. But, it all boils down to imagining the lines. and tracing it by yourself.

In order to do the imaginative tracing, get a clean sheet of paper. Then, look at it and imagine the drawing you want to draw. Finally, draw over imagined lines.

Every live creature has a certain rhythm manifested in every pose of its body. This rhythm can be sketched very quickly and easily, but you can’t finish a picture using only this method. In order to do it, get a set of references to a single object you want to draw. Analyze, and see common lines to connect. Use these lines to sketch a simple representation of the body as we learned in imaginative tracing. Use gesture sketch as a suggestion to draw the structure over the lines.
